Should you find yourself needing legal representation, it may be difficult to ascertain where you should begin. While there are many lawyers, not all are qualified to represent you in your case.
How do you find the right lawyer?
Whether you need a divorce lawyer or DUI lawyer, finding a lawyer you are comfortable with should be the first priority. He or she needs to be someone you can trust since you will need to divulge personal information involving your case.
In your search to find a lawyer, you can begin at your State Bar Association. While the bar cannot refer you directly to an individual lawyer, it can put you in touch with a legal referral service. For example, if you contact the State Bar of California, they will direct you to the Lawyer Referral Services Program. Based upon your specific case, requirements, and budget, the lawyer referral service can provide you with several qualified and specialized lawyers. You can receive up to three referrals for the same case, and there is no charge for the referral service.
In addition, your State Bar Association can also provide you with resources for lawyer referral based specifically upon your county.
Questions to ask a lawyer
It is important to ask the proper questions when meeting with your potential lawyer for the first time. Asking the right questions will instill confidence that he or she is the right person for the job. Keep some of these questions in mind when you interview a lawyer.
- What kind of experience do you have in this type of law?
- Do you carry malpractice insurance?
- Do you have a strategy on how to pursue my case?
- How much will I participate in my case?
- How will I be kept informed regarding my case?
- Will you provide me with a fee agreement?
- What is your hourly fee?
- How much will your services cost?
There are avenues where you can get legal advice without retaining a lawyer. You can also file a legal claim without an attorney. Your options for securing legal advice without a lawyer include:
- Small Claims Court – By brining your case to small claims court, you can resolve a minor legal matter without hiring a lawyer. Small claims courts often limit the claims to $2,000. They also exclude certain types of claims like divorce, claims involving title to property, and cases involving the city or state. For around $50, anyone can bring suit using everyday language.
- Government Organizations – Your local government organizations can provide legal answers and advice. If you have questions regarding general business or taxes, the state attorney general’s office or the Department of Revenue can be helpful. Other local governmental agencies or departments that administer permits or licenses may be able to answer legal questions on these matters. If you qualify for low-income assistance, then you may be able to obtain advice and possibly representation from your local Legal Aid Society chapter.
Whether you will be municipal court or simply filing city court records, there are many instances when having legal representation can help you:
- Child adoption
- Will creation
- Divorce
- Landlord or tenant issues
- Spousal abuse
- Crime
- Contractual agreements
- Injuries from an accident
